“This was the first lamp I purchased for my studio apartment in NYC. I moved to New York in 1969 right out of college and lived in a hotel for women and then shared an apartment until I got my very own in 1971. A year later, I needed to replace the shade. I had the day off from work at Saks 5th Avenue and I was all dressed up to go shopping and have a frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity. On my way home, I had my purse snatched off my arm. I chased the thieves up FDR Drive, never losing hold of my lampshade. An off-duty policeman and I caught them and took them to court. This is the same shade.”
